Beekeeping started as a hobby on the farm and has grown into a 90-hive operation. With a partnership with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hivesforheroes.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hives For Heroes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Funny Farm Apiaries uses their platform to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">help mentor Veterans &amp; First Responders. Researchers say the act of beekeeping may help people with mental health issues such as stress. In addition to \u201cbeekeeping therapy,\u201d Funny Farms builds connections with the community through mentoring, beekeeper experiences, talks, farm tours, and honey sales.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Can\u2019t make it on this date? <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same workshop is also being offered on May 19. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pasafarming.org\/event\/the-beekeeper-experience\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Learn more and register here<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Notes<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each participant must sign (or their parents or legal guardian) a participation agreement available at the apiary on the day of the tour. If need be, we can email the form to you for prior signatures. This agreement ensures that you or the parent \/ legal guardian understands the inherent risk around a working bee hive. We will not be held liable for bee stings, allergic reactions, or unsafe behavior by participants of your tour, as well as our right to refuse a participant a tour if we deem they are acting in an unsafe manner at the apiary and near the bee hives.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>This is a hands-on workshop.\u00a0<\/b>Please wear weather-appropriate clothing and footwear and consider the following as it pertains to working with bees:\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wear long pants (preferably NOT black). Still, the draft largely neglects many of our most critical priorities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Climate resilience and land access received little support while commodity programs and crop insurance were granted billions of additional dollars. These increased subsidies to industrial agriculture come at the expense of future SNAP benefits and the millions of Americans who face food insecurity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>So, what do we do now?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Adrienne Nelson and Lindsey Shapiro, organizers with the National Young Farmers Coalition and Pasa Sustainable Agriculture, will answer questions you may have about the bill and discuss opportunities to influence the draft as it enters the next stage of the process. Policy experts from the National Young Farmers Coalition will also be on hand to provide insights from inside the DC Beltway. to learn about their weed management system, including the use of extensive summer cover cropping.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Founded in 2003, Pennypack Farm &amp; Education Center is a 13-acre diversified vegetable farm co-managed by Kirstie and Steph Jones using organic practices to grow for CSA and a food donation program. In addition to looking at cover cropping, we will discuss Pennypack\u2019s cultivation practices between and within rows to maximize crop production.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the primary components of Pennypack\u2019s soil health program is the use of cover crops during all four seasons to build soil structure, prevent erosion, and manage weeds. Pennypack uses a wide variety of cover crops on the farm, including nitrogen-fixing legumes such as crimson clover, vetch, and peas, as well as grasses that provide organic matter, such as oats and Sudan grass. They also use innovative cover crops such as teff grass and winter wheat in the walkways between crop beds to prevent erosion and weed growth.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Farm managers Kirstie and Steph will be sharing their experience with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS)\u2019s Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP), which supports their farm in developing diverse cover crop mixes to meet their farm\u2019s sustainability and soil health goals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Don\u2019t leave early!<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> We will be enjoying locally made seasonal pie and ice cream to end our evening together.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Notes<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Please wear weather-appropriate clothing and footwear <\/strong>for the tour at Pennypack Farm &amp; Education Center. With an emphasis on market bouquets, we will discuss different bouquet styles, tools and fixes, and other flower facts. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions on seed-starting techniques and field-growing environments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>About the host<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lizzy Beller is a flower farmer and the owner of Bubbly Hills Farm<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in Emmaus, Pennsylvania. Lizzy graduated with a bachelor&#8217;s in mechanical engineering at Penn State. She participated in the Rodale Institute\u2019s Farmer Training (RIFT) program and fell in love with flower farming. After completing the RIFT program, Lizzy started farming on a half-acre plot at The Seed Farm Agricultural Business Incubator.
