Special attention is paid to fluid checks before operation\, and we will introduce basic diagnostics and maintenance of the equipment. We will discuss safety precautions to take when operating tractors to keep yourself and others free from injury. \nDay 2: Hands-on operation & safety – Trainers will work with folks in small groups and one-on-one to provide new operators with little-to-no tractor experience\, supervised\, hands-on time driving 4-wheel tractors\, including the use of 3-point hitch to attach and detach implements safely\, and\, weather + field conditions permitting\, the use of implements in the field. \nThis class is ideal for folks who have little to no experience operating a 4-wheel tractor or who have experience but lack formal training.   \nParticipants have the option of registering for both days or for day 1 only. Though Sarah loves to repair equipment\, she’s found she’s most joyous when teaching. Sarah has traveled across New York State (and now around PA!) to train farmers on how their equipment functions and best practices for operation. In the winter\, Sarah works with the Hudson Valley Farm Hub to teach a ten-day Farm Mechanic Basics program for farmers to learn how to repair and maintain their own equipment. She has found a real passion for making mechanical information accessible to Queer\, Trans\, Black\, Indigenous\, people of color\, women and non-binary folks.  \nDavid Sell is Farm Manager at The Seed Farm\, overseeing both the Farm Business Incubator Program as well as vegetable production that goes directly into Second Harvest Food Bank’s pantry network. David has worked on small farms for over a decade and has been responsible for operating a range of tractors for a variety of applications. \nThis course will also be offered in Western-Central PA on March 21-22. \nNotes\n\nThere will be a 1-hour lunch break each day. Or it can be the dreamiest part of the season\, surrounded by a sea of green baby plants while winter still lingers outside. \nJoin three farmers with several decades of collective growing experience at The Seed Farm to learn about their best practices\, lessons learned\, and favorite tools for seed starting at a variety of scales. Whether you want to increase your production space or improve the efficiency of the space you have\, you’ll find out about tools and techniques to germinate seeds faster\, grow healthier plants\, and improve your bottom line.  \nTools for demonstration and trial will include a vacuum seeder\, various sizes of soil block makers\, a drop seeder\, a pinpoint seeder\, and the paper pot transplanter. We will discuss the use of various tray types\, including peet/ biodegradable pots\, WinStrip trays\, Soil Blocks\, and standard plastic trays. Growers will share their experiences using different seed starting and germination methods and how this impacted their efficiency\, scale\, markets\, and crop plan. \nWe will look at three germination set-ups for starting seedlings—heat mats\, grow lights\, and a germination chamber—and see a side-by-side comparison of two different potting mixes. \nSpeakers:\n\nDan Hunter is the owner/operator of Hunter Hill CSA\, a small acreage\, no-till\, organic practices farm that serves 130 members in the Lehigh Valley.\nKristin Illick and Jeffrey Frank co-own and operate Liberty Gardens\, a vegetable farm just outside Bethlehem\, Pennsylvania. They grow produce for restaurants and retail sales in NYC and the Lehigh Valley.\nDavid Sell is Farm Manager at The Seed Farm\, overseeing both the Farm Business Incubator Program as well as vegetable production that goes directly into Second Harvest Food Bank’s pantry network.
